I’ve heard other authors complaining about this issue. I’m sure there are people out there who have legitimate reasons for doing a crowdsourcing campaign. Some of those people are truly on a restrictive budget due to health issues and can’t afford a thirty dollar book cover. So, yeah. There are those people who really need help, and most people are happy to lend a hand (or a few bucks) to those who are truly in need.
But then there are authors who try to take advantage. I see them posting their crowdsourcing campaign links in Facebook author groups and begging other authors to fund not only their book, but their rent for six months so they can quit their day job. I work outside the home and have to scrape together time to write and money to buy stock photos for covers. Most authors are in the same position I’m in. We don’t have the money to pay for someone else’s rent and living expenses while they dedicate all their time to writing, or pay for their paperbacks and swag for book signings. I’m not sure why some people feel entitled to have a free ride. Maybe they don’t realize they’re not the only person to have ever written a book.
Exactly. I mean, I’m all for those people who need it, but even then, you don’t know who to trust in these kind of situations. It sucks because you want to believe that there are good people in the world that legitimately need help, but who can you trust, you know?
