What I Learned About Running a Blog Tour

We recently wrapped up the first blog tour I have ever organized and run myself. It was rewarding and exhausting, thrilling and nerve wracking… And I cannot wait to do it again!

I have participated in a few blog tours during my short career, but I haven’t had to do too much. Just answer interview questions, get my links together, and go; it was pretty straight forward. When I had my first experience with book piracy, I thought that organizing a tour would be the best way to raise awareness and get people to learn more about book piracy. My first thought was “This will be easy.” Yeah… right.

No matter how organized you think you are, there is always more to be done.

I obsessed about making this tour perfect. I had a sign up sheet and let the authors determine what days they wanted to do. I even had some authors generously volunteer several freebies, but I wanted to make sure that they were given a decent spread. I think that was my problem. I tried to spread books out too thin and ended up with more books at the end of the tour than the beginning. Looking back, it would have made more sense, and been more rewarding for the authors that donated several books to have their own day. That way one offs, prequels, and the first book of a series would be given a better lay out. Of course, there is the sense of build up and encouraging people to follow the tour because the more days they follow, the more books they get. I’m still playing with this idea, so hopefully I have it perfected for the next tour.

Authors have their own lives.

You know, as an author, I tend to get wrapped up in my own little world. I think part of my issue was that I didn’t give the authors enough time to process the fact that there was a tour before getting them to get their books ready. Personal emergencies and life in general happens. Granted, I had some of the most amazing authors to work with, so I didn’t care if the internet caught fire, just to say that I was able to work with these people was a blessing. In the next tour, I am going to announce it with enough time for everyone to get their stuff in before the posts need to be scheduled.

Sometimes people can’t help themselves

I don’t want to be too specific about the situation because they know who they are, but I learned that I can only do so much on my end. What I can be specific about it that rude people will be ejected from the tour and not allowed to participate in future tours. We are all doing this on a volunteer basis. Not once will an author or blogger be charged to participate. However, I still expect some level of professionalism and courtesy from everyone that wants to be involved. Granted, the authors and bloggers that ended up being on the tour were amazing and I cannot wait to work with them again!

Giveaways are awesome!

We did a $20 Amazon gift card giveaway with this last tour. I am paying for the card out of my own pocket and there has been a delay with the funds, so that is why the winner has not been announced yet but they will soon. What I would like to see happen in the next tour is do a bundle/ gift basket giveaway. Perhaps have authors donate autographed books or swag and put first through third prize baskets together for people. More detail needs to be put together, obviously, but I would love to do something like that.

We can never have too many people volunteering to donate books, give space on their blog, or even just spread the word.

While the group on Facebook isn’t huge right now, we are always accepting new authors and bloggers that want to help spread the word. The tour is not limited to a specific genre or a specific blog type. We had Paranormal, Romance, Sci-Fi and more in our last tour, and there are so many other fantastic genres out there that we would love to see join us. If you or someone you know is interested in the group, or being involved in anyway, please join our Facebook group and help us spread the word about ebook piracy.

All in all this tour was an amazingly rewarding and inspiring venture for me, and I am happy to say that it will be continued. I have big plans for the tour in the future and as it grows, I will share them all with you.

By the way, even though we are not running a tour right now, you can still get free books! Several authors that participated in the tour have permanently free books available every single day. We have started compiling a list on the blog under a brand new section called “Books“. To keep everything neat and pretty, I have added cover images for each of the free books. Those images link directly to the author’s Amazon listing. I will say that we preached about looking out for click bait, so if you are uncomfortable clicking the image, you can search for the book on Amazon and use the cover image to help you find the right book!

Thank you again for all of your support. We look forward to bringing you more free books in the future.

Authors and Bloggers Against Piracy Blog Tour- Day Seven: DM Yates, Tricia Drammeh, Maegan Provan, Joleene Naylor

Before we get started on today’s post, I wanted to say a few words. Well, type a few, but you know what I mean. This tour has meant a lot to me. I never thought that my books were worth enough to get pirated until I saw them on that site a few months ago. It was quite surreal. When I came up with the idea for the blog tour, I never thought that anyone would go for it. I mean, it’s silly isn’t it? Giving books away to speak out against piracy? My hope was that it would get people talking and it has. We never set out to stop piracy out right because that is an unrealistic goal. We set out to raise awareness and that’s just what we did. Thank you to everyone that has reached out, commented (good and bad), spread the word, took the time to educate themselves about piracy, and even just stopped by. You are all awesome. Thank you.

Oh! And don’t forget that today is the last day to enter the giveaway. The winner will be announced on the official blog within the week. a Rafflecopter giveaway

The Night Touched haven’t been around in centuries. Created by the original vampire, the “First Born,” the Night Touched were made to create the bloodlines which all modern day vampires come from. Their unique powers and colorful marks set them apart from other vampires.

Harper Kemp had long believed that she was the last Night Touched in existence. With her friends, Lily Buchannan and Jason Howard, she has learned to accept it. Until one night when everything changed.

A plea from her dreams and a forbidden romance, Harper sets out on a path of discovery; not only is she not alone, she’s about to face her worst nightmare- a devastatingly handsome slayer named Silas with a finger on her non existent pulse.

These vampires don’t sparkle. They hunt and kill, driven to evil by the raging darkness inside them. From the moment they feed on their first victim they are lost – but what if the darkness was destroyed before that happened? What would be left? Something not seen in thousands of years.

A chance encounter leaves Daniel in just that position. With no memories of who he once was, and powers he barely understands, can he survive in a world where all magical powers are viewed as a sign of darkness? Can he convince others that he is free from evil?

And is he? Has the darkness truly been purged from his soul? Or is it merely driven into hiding deep within, silenced for now but waiting to strike again?

Authors and Bloggers Against Piracy Blog Tour

You know, you hear about authors having their books stolen all the time, and you pray it never happens to you. Yesterday, the latest website to illegally distribute books from hard working authors was exposed. The community rose up and has done a lot to have those books removed. Of course, the sad fact remains that that won’t be the last website to provide illegal downloads of books.

Tricia pointed out to me that simply holding copyright doesn’t mean as much as it should. Anyone can still come in and take your hard work simply because they want to. If you don’t have the money to hire a lawyer to fight the person that stole your work, you are out of luck. She also made an excellent point. People think that because we are published, we are all like J.K. Rowling, rolling around in money and on the cusp of a movie deal. They think that we have countless agents and a huge fat cat publisher backing us. So they aren’t really taking money out of our pockets. They’re taking money out of the hands of corporate fat cats… How wrong they are.

So that got me thinking. How can we as a community educate our readers and the general public as well as keep people from downloading our books illegally? The answer was quite simple; a blog tour! A week (or more, depending on how many people sign up) set aside for authors to share as many of their books as they wish for free. Why free you ask? Well, people pirate books because they don’t want to pay for them. So, why shouldn’t we as authors control that? Why shouldn’t we offer our book(s) for free for a week and encourage people to get our books the right way?

So this is a call to arms. We need bloggers to promote and host as few or as many days as they would like. You will not be comp’d because this is a free tour. No money is exchanging hands. If you are willing to use your blog as a platform to speak out against book piracy, please volunteer.

We need authors to offer as few or as many books for free as they can. If you’re fortunate enough to make a living off of your writing, don’t put yourself out. One book is what we would like to see but if you want to contribute more, you are more than welcome to. If you already have a book that is offered for free, you are welcome to contribute that.

I would also like to encourage giveaways, raffles, personalized prizes… Whatever you want to do to make this a fun event. If you sign up for the event, you are not required or expected to do anything more than put one of your books up for free for a day.

This tour isn’t going to be about putting one out or in an awkward position. It’s just a way for authors to take back control of how and when their books are free. It is a way to discourage book piracy.

We also need a logo, so if you’re a graphic artist and are willing to donate a logo, that would be awesome! Depending on the turn out, we’ll do a vote to determine the official logo. If this is successful, I’d love for it to be an annual thing.

I will share more information as it comes in.

Thank you for your time. If you are interested, please request to join our group on Facebook
