Pretty When She Dies (Pretty When She Dies, #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Amaliya is your typical college student with family issues. After a coffee date with a professor turns into her digging herself out of her own grave, Amaliya’s life is drastically changed. It turns out that her professor is a sadistic vampire with a tendency to turn people and leave them to figure everything else out on their own. With no family to count on, Amaliya must embark on a journey to find someone like her who can help her understand her new life.

Honestly, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Rhiannon Frater. My friends have all highly recommended her. When I saw Pretty When She Dies free on the Kindle Market, I jumped on it. I’m always looking for an interesting new take on vampires. Maybe I set the bar too high, but this book was a total let down.

Amaliya is one of those now all too familiar heroines who is drop dead gorgeous, and every man wants her, but she doesn’t see it herself. She is a self proclaimed rocker chick with a goth tendency who likes to wear slutty clothes, then get offended when nasty old men hit on her. She was a cliche all over. She, along with the other female characters in this book were all bitchy, dimwitted bimbos. The male characters were all either disgusting pigs or douche bags that were also incredibly attractive. The fact that vampires can cry blood in this universe was just beyond dumb to me. I mean, I appreciated that she had to hunt for blood, sleep during the day, and didn’t have a reflection, but cry blood? No, thank you.

I was really surprised at the poor quality of the editing in this book, as well. There were a ton of errors that any read through by an editor would have caught. I tried to keep reading, but it honestly felt like a chore. I don’t like leaving novels incomplete, but this is one I will not be finishing. I may read other work by Rhiannon Frater, but I will not pick this book up again, nor will I read the rest of the series.
